A Constructional Approach to Argument Realization of Chinese Resultatives

چکیده

This paper argues for a constructional view of the resultative constructions, specifically the resultative-verb compounds (henceforth RVCs). We claim that the effect of the construction must be taken into account in the realization of arguments, and the realization must be moderated by the linking rules. This paper is organized as follows: Section 2 provides a brief definition of resultatives in English and Chinese; Section 3 reviews previous works on Chinese resultatives; Section 4 introduces the constructional approach and argument realization; Section 5 proposes the event-frames and linking rules in Chinese RVC constructions; Section 6 discusses the Chinese inverted causative RVC constructions. Section 7 concludes this paper.

Argument Realization of Chinese Result and Phase Complements

This paper discusses result complements and phase complements in Chinese, both of which are postverbal elements. Despite their surface similarity, they are different with respect to argument realization. While the result complements allow complicated argument realization (in terms of semantic host, verbal transitivity, and subcategorization of objects), the phase complements function as lexical...

The English Resultative as a Family of Constructions

English resultative expressions have been a major focus of research on the syntax-semantics interface. We argue in this article that a family of related constructions is required to account for their distribution. We demonstrate that a number of generalizations follow from the semantics of the constructions we posit: the syntactic argument structure of the sentence is predicted by general princ...

Towards a Lexical-Constructional Account of the Locative Alternation

Following Fillmore’s (1968) discussion of verbs exhibiting different argument realization patterns, a number of syntactic studies have analyzed the spray-load alternation (e.g., Pinker 1989, Levin 1993, Dowty 2000) in different ways. One account that differs from primarily syntactically oriented analyses is Goldberg’s (1995) Construction Grammar approach. It proposes that multiple argument real...

Dative Constructions in Chinese

There are three dative constructions in Chinese. A verb may be present in just one, in two, or in all three constructions. A pattern can be captured in the constructional approach. While the constructions all carry a sense of transfer, they differ in terms of range of transfer and argument role of the dative object or the gei object. The constructional view also provides an account of the patte...
